Council flags recurring crashes on State Route 123 and asks staff to consult ODOT
Summary
Council discussed repeated crashes at the Lantis/State Route 123 radius and asked the city manager to consult the city engineer and ODOT about possible countermeasures such as chevrons, rumble strips or other engineering changes.
Mr. Tim Humphries told council that a vehicle recently left the roadway and nearly struck a residence at the corner of Lantis and State Route 123; he said the location has been the scene of multiple incidents. "We need to step our game up on that radius turn coming into 123 coming into Carlisle," Humphries said.
Chief Lane said the department has responded to that residence at least three times during his tenure and suggested hydroplaning and speed changes as contributing factors. Council members discussed countermeasures including additional chevron signs (some have been vandalized or knocked down), rumble strips or raised pavement markers, and the possible trade-offs of guardrails. Mr. Lohr said the city engineer would be asked to evaluate the location and that ODOT would likely need to be involved because the route is a state highway.
Council did not adopt a formal motion to install specific improvements during the meeting; instead, City Manager Chris Lohr said staff would inform the city engineer and reach out to ODOT and the adjacent German Township to see whether engineering changes or signage adjustments are feasible.
Mr. Humphries pressed for the concern to be on record in case a serious crash occurs there in the future. Council agreed to pursue further study and follow up with a report to council.
