Coventry Conservation Commission reviews Nearmap tool, park bridge inspection and trail updates

The Coventry Conservation Commission met May 6, 2026, in Conference Room B and moved through routine business that included approval of minutes, a demonstration of aerial imaging for environmental mapping, and reports on parks and trail maintenance.
Chairman Jamie Coss called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. and confirmed members Vincent Brandon Shaw, Paul Manzone, Art Hall and Brian Coss were present. Members unanimously approved the minutes after Art Hall suggested correcting the utility company name to Eversource; Vincent Brandon Shaw moved to approve the minutes and Paul Manzone seconded.
The commission reported a remaining balance of $2,706.22 in its budget and said it expects small expenditures soon for table wood and for repair or construction of a small bridge. No members of the public attended the meeting.
In new business, Commission member Vincent Brandon Shaw demonstrated Nearmap aerial imagery as a possible tool for mapping vernal pools. Shaw noted the product’s imagery is captured only in the fall through spring seasons and said that limited seasonal coverage could constrain the commission’s ability to map pools that are most visible at other times of year.
Members discussed Millbrook Park, where a small decorative bridge will be inspected shortly to assess repair or replacement needs. The commission recorded that, following trail work at Patriots Park Woods, many trees were removed by contractor Asplund to clear power lines for Eversource; no redevelopment changes to the trails were reported at this meeting.
The commission also heard that the Rose‑Williams Preserve Plan is still expected in final form from Eric Thomas and the Land Use Office; no schedule was provided. On the Route 6 Trail, Brian Coss asked for a progress update and Shaw said Bolton has completed trail development and installed a parking lot on Stony Road.
Members reported on an Earth Day cleanup on Daly Road that collected approximately 140 "Nip" bottles during a four-person effort.
Votes at a glance: Vincent Brandon Shaw moved to approve the minutes (as corrected); Paul Manzone seconded and the motion passed unanimously (all members present voting yes). Chairman Jamie Coss moved to adjourn at 7:50 p.m.; that motion was approved by all present.
The commission did not take any land-use referrals or formal policy actions at the meeting. The Rose‑Williams Preserve Plan remains pending submission from the Land Use Office; the bridge inspection and any repairs are next operational steps identified by the commission.
