Price City Council on May 27 approved an engineering services agreement to advance the Mead's Wash detention basin design to approximately 90% completion, a step staff said would strengthen the city's chances when applying for a Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) grant.
City staff explained that a 90%-complete design position increases competitiveness for grant funding from the state division of emergency management; the council approved a contract with Johansen and Tuttle Engineering with a total estimated cost not to exceed $60,000. Staff said the design cost would be paid from the city's stormwater fund, which is funded through a specific stormwater charge on residential bills.
Council members described the project as a keystone flood-mitigation effort that also touches nearby recreation and trail projects. One council member said the basin would help attenuate flooding that has affected mountain-bike race-course areas and city storm drains. "It's a good keystone project and worth putting forth a good proposal," a council member said.
The motion to approve the engineering services agreement passed by voice vote. Staff said that if the BRIC grant funding is not awarded, the city could pursue alternative funding options.
