Commission members said that during foundation excavations at the GEM Theater workers found small artifacts set against old bricks, including two pennies, a center‑fired bullet casing and a pocket knife that is likely to have been dropped by an original bricklayer. The discovery indicates historically intact deposits in the theater foundation area; commission members did not record any formal archaeological plan or required action at the meeting.
On cemetery preservation, the commission clarified that an abandoned family cemetery on private property can be made tax‑exempt but only if it is properly platted off from the rest of the parcel. The clarification followed public inquiries about tax status; no specific parcel or case was discussed at the meeting.
Staff member Tony Ross told the commission he is actively preparing the budget that will take effect July 1, and members discussed the possibility of attending statewide training anticipated in October or November. The commission briefly discussed community concerns about data centers and a potential subdivision near the Sugar Valley community but did not pursue formal action.
Routine board business included confirmation that Chair Ken Padgett and Vice Chair Add Layson seek reappointment (their terms expire June 1) and discussion about whether members may donate their $40 monthly stipends to the Historical Society; staff clarified the county must issue the stipend check to the individual, who may then donate it independently. The meeting adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
