The Oak Grove R‑VI Board of Education on a voice vote approved renewing employee health insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield at a negotiated 9.9% increase. Staff said the district’s per-employee monthly premium would rise from $713 to $783.84 and projected an approximate district cost increase of $244,303 for the coming year.
Staff reported the district had been with UnitedHealthcare for more than 17 years and moved last year to Blue Cross Blue Shield. When the carrier initially priced the renewal based on claims the district’s exposure would have been about 23%, the presenter said; the board’s broker worked to reduce that to 9.9% before the district finalized the renewal. The district recommended continuing its practice of paying 100% of employee premiums for now while discussing whether to set a future district rate cap.
A board member moved to approve the renewal. The motion carried on a voice vote with no recorded roll-call in the minutes provided.
Board discussion touched on the trade-offs facing the district: staff noted that switching insurers frequently can hurt a plan’s long-term rating and that a district-paid benefit contributes to employees’ total compensation. The board asked staff to continue monitoring both premium trends and options for a future rate cap.
What happens next: staff will implement the renewal for the 2026–27 plan year and bring additional budget details to the board as part of the ongoing 2026–27 preliminary budget process.
