Karen McDonald presented the request and said the funds will be used to purchase GED test vouchers. She explained each subtest costs $45 and the full battery costs $180. "This grant will buy about 88 subtests," she said, and "in total, we can help about 22 individuals with the full battery." McDonald described the vouchers as an important barrier removal for students who complete coursework but lack funds to test.
Board members asked about prior use of the grant; McDonald said the district has received the Dollar General Literacy Foundation support in the past and has used funds for Chromebooks or other items depending on the grant cycle. She said adult-program graduations recently included 53 students and that having vouchers available increases the testing rate and expedited credentialing.
The board approved the grant by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
