Governing board elects officers, renews TORCH committee and approves PORA facilities agreement

The Sun City West governing board convened an organizational meeting on April 23 to elect its incoming officers and conduct several governance actions before moving into its regular meeting.
Elections: By secret ballot the board elected Alan Schlemmer as president, Nick Turner as vice president, Sandra Forsey as secretary and Ann Becknell as treasurer. Tellers Kathy Estes and Jack Fisher administered the ballots.
TORCH committee: Director Alan Schlemmer moved to renew the TORCH Special Committee for fiscal year 2026–27 to allow the resident‑led program to redesign its syllabus and marketing. Directors debated whether TORCH should remain a special committee or be treated as an operations‑run program; proponents said the committee preserves resident independence in curriculum and volunteer recruitment, while critics said operations staff lead much of the logistical work. The board approved renewal and asked current chair Bob Wilson to provide periodic updates.
PORA MOU: The board also approved a memorandum of understanding to document how the Property Owners and Residents Association (commonly PORA) uses RCSC W recreation facilities under policy FAO 6. The MOU records that PORA may use rooms/facilities without charge, but optional extras such as coffee service, ice or catering will be charged at prevailing rates and documented per policy; staff will keep the signed agreement on file.
None of these governance decisions required external approvals; they were decided by the full board during the meeting.
