The chief told council members the department recorded 8,135 traffic stops last year and reported "zero racial profiling complaints in the last 2 years," a figure he said reflects the department’s policy and complaint handling. "We are above board on them all," he added.
A council member asked whether the reporting requirement stemmed from state or federal law. The chief said it is required by state law. He also told the council the audit and associated work cost about $11,300 per year and described a scheduling issue tied to a computer problem in Austin that affected the filing calendar.
Council did not take formal action on the report during the special meeting. The presentation and the brief question-and-answer period concluded with the department’s affirmation that no racial-profiling complaints had been filed in the past two years and with no additional follow-up directed by the council.
The report’s audit was described in the meeting as an annual requirement; the chief indicated staff would continue submitting the required documentation on the schedule determined by the state.
