Planning commission approves sign variance for Consigner Collection

The Stow City Planning Commission voted to approve application PC26-3, granting a variance that will allow Consigner Collection to install a monument sign of about 25–26 square feet and a reduced setback from the right-of-way.
Staff member Zach introduced the application and said the property, formerly zoned C3 and now C2 under the new code, requires a setback variance because the old code requires a 10-foot setback. “They just want a bigger sign so it's more visible,” Zach said, noting comparable signs nearby that do not meet the older setback standard.
Commissioners discussed an engineering comment recommending the sign be pushed back slightly for sight-distance safety and questioned masonry-base details required under the new code. Staff explained the new code requires a monument base wider than the sign; under the old code the base-width detail differs, so the applicant needs a variance for the setback and may need adjustments to meet masonry-width expectations.
No public emails were submitted and no audience speakers objected. A motion to approve the sign variance was moved and seconded; the commission approved the motion by roll call. The applicant will proceed to the permitting stage and must comply with any engineering or building-permit conditions before installation.
The decision applies only to the variance requested and does not itself authorize sign construction; the applicant must obtain required permits and meet any conditions noted by city departments.
