Mendham Township’s Historic Preservation Committee agreed at its Jan. 8 meeting to revise its mission statement to explicitly reference historic districts and to coordinate more closely with township permitting authorities.
Ernie Maw said he would "include language to reflect inclusion of historic districts," a change the committee endorsed as part of a draught review. Committee members clarified that the Historic Preservation Committee (HPC) does not have authority over private property and can only offer assistance to property owners, not impose restrictions.
The committee directed that it will meet with the Planning Board to better understand current permitting and zoning processes affecting historic properties and develop a standardized process with the Township to flag potentially historic sites during reviews. The committee framed the measures as procedural steps to ensure historic resources are recognized early in local planning and permitting.
Members agreed to circulate the revised draught once Maw adds the proposed language and to follow up on timing for the Planning Board meeting.
