Planning commission denies proposed agricultural zoning amendments after public comment

The Canton Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted Jan. 21 to deny File 156, application 2527, a set of proposed zoning regulation amendments addressing agricultural uses and accessory structures.
Staff described the proposal as intended to reduce restrictions on farm stands and clarify applicability of stormwater and erosion-control standards to routine agricultural activities. Two local farmers—Tony Grama of White Oak Acres Farm and Aaron Hilliard, a new Canton resident—spoke in favor of changes that would make it easier to run roadside farm stands and sustain small farms.
Despite public support, commissioners returned to a draft motion prepared after prior meetings and, after discussion, voted to deny the application in accordance with the staff/commission memorandum; the motion passed 5–0.
The minutes record that related agricultural regulation amendments under other application numbers were later handled with separate motions and approvals.
Next steps: staff will record the denial in the record and proceed with other agriculture-related amendments that the commission separately approved or revised at the meeting.
