Newton Select Board grants contracting authority, approves timber tax collections and schedules hazardous‑waste collection

The Newton Select Board took a series of administrative actions and made community announcements at its Aug. 5 meeting.

To expedite annual procurement, the Board authorized the town administrator to sign the upcoming gas and propane contract and to act on the town’s behalf when bids require a short signature window. The authorization was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.

The Board acknowledged receipt of a notice of intent to cut for tax map 5‑6‑6 “pursuant to New Hampshire RSA 79 col 10,” as recorded in the minutes, and then authorized the tax collector to collect timber tax levies: $227.94 for tax map 14‑1‑2 (listed as 125 Development Corp.) and an amount recorded in the minutes as '1,13141' for tax map 6‑11‑2‑2 (39 Woodier Street). Motions were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. The numeric formatting for the second timber levy is unclear in the public record and should be verified with the tax office.

Announcements included a hazardous‑waste collection day set for Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the recreation commission’s request for volunteers to help develop a five‑year plan and for participants on a senior trip scheduled for Aug. 22. Near the end of the public session, the Board voted to enter non‑public session under RSA 91‑A:3,II(a) to discuss dismissal of a public employee and to receive legal advice. The public meeting recording stopped after the motion was made and seconded.
