Pittsburg VFW commander outlines veterans services, seeks new members

Roman Ebley, commander of the Pittsburg VFW Camp County Memorial, used his public comment to summarize the post’s services for veterans and to recruit new members.

Ebley said he served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force and worked 17 years for Raytheon Technologies, and that he has been commander of the post for more than four years. “Veterans is our main focus here, supporting our veterans,” he said, describing the post’s role in helping veterans file claims and access benefits.

The commander emphasized practical programs run by the post. He described a dog program and local fundraising efforts to support veterans in need, and noted the use of technology to help veterans “get online, file for claims, get support.”

Ebley also outlined an annual scholarship program the post promotes to local students, with successful applicants advanced to district and state competitions; he said these efforts are intended to teach and reward patriotism through essays and the Voice of Democracy program. He referenced his family’s long ties to the country while urging community involvement in post activities.

On membership, Ebley said the post is small but active: “we're a post of probably 52 members right now, we're trying to get our 57 in,” and he encouraged younger veterans from recent conflicts to stop by and apply. He said the auxiliary is restarting and that family members with direct ties to veterans can join the auxiliary roster.

He also described support for the VFW National Home in Michigan, saying the home assists widows and orphans and that sponsors help beneficiaries through school. Closing his remarks, Ebley noted the post has operated for 54 years and offered a salute to the nation’s 250th anniversary: “Happy birthday, America, 250 years.”
