Board gives first readings to student immunization and communicable‑disease policies

WINDHAM, Maine — The Windham‑Raymond School District Board approved first readings on March 18 for two health‑related policies and agreed to remove one procedural regulation from the policy book in favor of an exhibit the nursing team will maintain.

The board voted to approve a first reading of policy JLCB, "Immunization of Students." Committee staff explained the policy was aligned with state chapter rule 126 and that the district removed outdated seventh‑grade‑specific language in favor of an exhibit listing current required immunizations and links to Department of Education resources. The exhibit will be posted on the district website as a family resource and updated by the nursing team as chapter rules change.

The board also approved a first reading of policy JLCC, "Communicable and Infectious Diseases." Committee members reviewed a set of legal references the policy reflects — including state statutes and chapter rules — and said the policy now explicitly directs the superintendent to follow Maine CDC guidance during public‑health events. The policy clarifies reporting obligations, exclusion authority for notifiable diseases and re‑entry procedures (including requiring a health‑care provider certificate when specified).

Finally, the board voted to delete regulation JLCCR from the policy book and convert it to an exhibit that district nurses will maintain because the committee determined the material is procedural and does not require board oversight.
