Elizabethton Board approves 2026–27 school budget with raises, no staff reductions

Director Mr. Van Hus told the board the district built the budget to avoid cutting staff positions and included a 1.5% raise for all employees. "We were able to keep every other position as well as we built in a 1.5% raise for all employees," he said.
Officials said the budget assumes higher medical and dental premiums and therefore includes conservative projections — Van Hus said a 12% increase in medical premiums was budgeted to be on the safe side. To balance the books, the maintenance department allocation is reduced by about 20% and the supplies budget by about 10%. The only position eliminated is a 100‑day contract at central office, removed through attrition.
The board also plans to ask the city to release $150,000 from a half-cent sales tax excess to help offset maintenance needs, officials said.
The motion to approve the budget was made and seconded and carried on a voice vote; the chair called for those in favor to say "I," and no members voiced opposition.
What happens next: The district will implement the budget for 2026–27 and continue to monitor insurance projections and maintenance needs; staff said they will pursue short‑term measures to manage reduced maintenance resources.
