Antique Boat Museum pitches new shop to house apprentices and classes

An Antique Boat Museum representative told the Village of Clayton Board of Trustees the museum’s restoration work is currently split between a small historic stone building on campus and a shared metal shop across Mary Street, limiting education and repair capacity. The representative said the proposed new shop would provide classroom space and workshop capacity needed to launch an apprentice program being developed with the New York State Department of Labor.
"We can't launch the apprenticeship unless we have the space to do that," the museum representative said, adding the Labor Department requires a six-month window for implementation after official approval. The representative said Clayton’s museum operations could serve as a model for similar programs statewide.
Trustees asked where the new shop would be located; the speaker said the site is on the corner of Mary and Riverside and described plans to mill some removed tree wood for reuse in exhibits. The board also discussed museum education efforts: K–5 school exhibits and free student-family admissions tied to a mounted annual exhibition.
The museum representative said the new facility would allow the institution to separate boat restoration work from maintenance operations and to host hands-on instruction for students. Trustees expressed support and offered to share materials and contacts to advance the project. The board did not take a formal vote on funding for construction during the meeting; any capital decisions would follow typical procurement and permitting steps.
The museum representative noted an upcoming regional boat show and asked for notifications and support; trustees responded with procedural guidance and encouragement.
