Members said that although bulbs and some labor might be sourced, installing the fixtures requires a boom/lift and specialized electrician work. A lift rental and associated costs were described in the meeting as potentially expensive — commissioners cited a rough figure of about $50,000 for lift rental in the conversation — and they agreed to follow up to determine exact bulb and fixture specifications.
Commissioners also discussed options for sourcing parts more cheaply and recruiting local contractors to reduce cost. "Let me know what bulb it is and then we might have to get it cheaper somewhere else," one member said, offering to look into suppliers.
The commission characterized the lighting issue as an example of grant-scope limitations: the Central Hudson grant covered some work but did not include the fixture modifications necessary for LED retrofits. No decision was made at the meeting; members directed staff to obtain the fixture specifications and cost estimates and to explore local vendors or volunteer equipment, where appropriate.
