Avenal council administers oaths, confirms leadership and approves board appointments

At its Jan. 9 meeting the Avenal City Council swore in elected members, confirmed a mayor pro tem and approved a slate of intergovernmental board assignments, including a new primary representative to the Commission on Aging.
The Avenal City Council on Jan. 9 administered the oath of office to three newly and re‑elected council members and completed its annual leadership organization and board appointments.
City Clerk Angie led the swearing‑in of the three members after the council accepted the Nov. 5, 2024 election results under Resolution 2025‑06. Council then opened nominations for mayor and mayor pro tem; after nominations and a roll call the council confirmed the nominated mayor pro tem by majority vote.
Mayor and council members discussed the time commitment required for regional boards — including LAFCO, the county transit JPA and the San Joaquin Valley policy council — and emphasized travel and meeting length as factors when taking assignments. Council reviewed a draft “Exhibit A” listing primary and alternate representatives to numerous county and regional committees.
By motion and roll call vote the council appointed Ricardo Verdugo as the city’s primary representative to the Kings County Commission on Aging and approved the remainder of the slate as presented. Council members noted the importance of representation on intergovernmental boards for securing transportation, infrastructure and housing funding for the city.
The administration asked newly appointed members to notify staff if they cannot attend consecutive day meetings, because several county boards meet back‑to‑back and can require an all‑day commitment. The agenda packet included the draft assignments and staff said it will return with any needed refinements to committee rosters.
