Officer Trevor Atkins delivered the Sault Ste. Marie School Resource Officer annual report for the 2023–24 school year on Aug. 5, describing school outreach, trainings and security work while reporting roughly 122 reportable calls for service.
Atkins said he missed about 13 weeks of the year due to an injury but continued coordinating with fellow officers when absent. He listed classroom presentations on online safety, vaping, drugs and personal responsibility; guest readings in elementary classrooms; participation in health fairs; and a first‑responder dodgeball fundraiser supporting Autism Awareness featuring local police, fire and Coast Guard personnel.
On security, Atkins said he worked with the district's IT department to upgrade security camera software and hardware to enable real‑time monitoring, enhanced County dispatch access to key assets, and ran tabletop exercises to test emergency plans. He also coordinated active‑threat mitigation training this summer with an expected 70 district employees scheduled to attend before school starts.
The SRO reported the 122 calls for service reflect incidents that generated a complaint number — including threats, assaults, vape possession and wellbeing checks — and do not count numerous non‑report incidents in which he assisted staff and students.
City Manager Brian Chapman and Chief Wesley Beering praised Atkins' work and said Administration will meet with the Sault Area School District superintendent, Amy Cronomer, to negotiate funding as the SRO contract enters year three.
Next steps: Administration will convene district leadership to finalize cost‑sharing for the SRO position going into year three; the SRO will continue scheduled trainings and operational coordination with schools and county partners.
