Sault Ste. Marie commission approves consent agenda and several equipment purchases, adopts grants and interlocal agreement

On Aug. 5 the Sault Ste. Marie City Commission approved a multi‑item consent agenda and voted unanimously on several purchases and budget amendments, accepted a FEMA fire grant, and approved an interlocal ALS agreement with Sugar Island Township. A contested budget increase for Pullar Stadium passed 6–1.
The Sault Ste. Marie City Commission on Aug. 5 approved a broad slate of routine and discretionary measures, including a consent agenda of meeting minutes and board acceptances, several equipment purchases and budget amendments, acceptance of a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant, and an interlocal emergency‑medical services agreement with Sugar Island Township.
Deputy City Manager Roben Troyer presented the consent agenda, which included appointment of David Markham to the zoning board of appeals, among other routine items. Commissioners moved and approved the consent agenda unanimously.
On procurement, the commission awarded a bid for solar radar speed signs for $26,631 and approved a $1,700 budget increase to cover minor overrun; the purchase and budget amendment passed unanimously. The commission also awarded a Ford F‑550 utility truck for the water department (approximately $75,700), approved purchase of a fire command vehicle (approx. $7,9xx) and a related budget amendment, and approved purchase of two high‑pressure hydraulic extrication units from Dingus Fire Equipment for $3,695 with a $700 budget amendment; those motions passed unanimously.
The commission accepted a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant award of $234,600 and approved related project budget amendments and reductions to items covered by the grant; motions passed unanimously.
The commission approved an interlocal agreement under which the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department will provide Advanced Life Support and transport services to Sugar Island Township for an annual per‑capita payment rather than per‑run billing. Chief Ed Miller and others told commissioners the arrangement had averaged roughly four to five calls per month and that city residents would remain the department's priority. The interlocal agreement was authorized unanimously, with the city manager and clerk authorized to sign.
Most motions recorded in the meeting were unanimous; the notable exception was a $30,000 project budget increase for the Pullar Stadium concession hood (see separate article) that passed 6–1.
Next steps: the city will proceed with the awarded contracts and execute the Sugar Island interlocal agreement; Administration will post the city parcel discussed by the commission on an online auction platform with a not‑to‑sell‑below floor as directed by the commission.
