Clewiston accepts FDOT grant to mill and resurface North Francisco Street, may add multiuse path

Clewiston’s City Commission on June 17 approved Resolution 2024-038, authorizing the mayor to sign the Florida Department of Transportation Small County Outreach agreement that funds milling and resurfacing of North Francisco Street from US 27/US 80 to Herbert Hoover Dyke Road.
Stephen Howard (speaking on behalf of the city engineer) told the commission that FDOT’s process requires prequalified contractors and that the statutory completion date listed in the agreement is 2028, but that the city is likely to receive a clearer, shorter schedule once design advances. "It's not a terribly complicated project... it's not a big major road," Howard said, and noted the project length is roughly four-tenths of a mile and may include sidewalk work and two culvert replacements.
Staff described design options including a tentative 10-foot multiuse path on the west side of North Francisco and a standard sidewalk on the east side; final scope will be fixed during design. Commissioners asked about drainage and ADA considerations; Howard said design will assess constructability and any drainage improvements.
Commissioner Thompson moved to approve the resolution; Commissioner Edmonds seconded and the motion carried. Staff said they will return with design updates and may present additional details on aesthetics or lighting if budget permits.
