Poolesville Parks staff report AEDs, crosswalk upgrades, parade security and facility projects

Parks staff updated the Poolesville Parks Board on safety equipment, infrastructure repairs and event planning at the Sept. 10 meeting.
Staff said an automatic external defibrillator (AED) has been installed at Elgen Park and a second unit is scheduled for Helmhouse. "One AED has already been installed at Elgen Park and a second unit is scheduled for installation soon at Helmhouse," staff reported.
New high‑visibility crosswalks were described as installed in the commercial district and near schools to improve pedestrian safety, and the town is targeting sidewalk repairs at previously identified high‑priority locations, with contractor scheduling underway. Staff said work will include completing the second half of the Tom Fox and Hughes intersection improvements and improving accessibility at a key crosswalk.
Event planning for Poolesville Day was a major topic. Staff said the town will secure the parade route with concrete blocks on the ends of key streets, park large trucks to physically block vendor ingress points, and deploy wooden barricades at specific intersections. "We will put concrete blocks... they will go in Friday afternoon and we will pull them Monday morning," staff said, describing vendor staging windows and strict arrival times.
Staff also reported low pond levels and drought stress affecting pond aerators; a county inspector has been engaged regarding a slow leak in a storm‑water pond near Stevens Park. Staffing shortages were discussed: two long‑term employees have been out for health reasons and summer help has returned to school, temporarily reducing crew capacity.
On facilities, the board heard that the basketball surface at Helmos Park is being resurfaced with a rollout plan to repaint and finalize playing surfaces; staff also said a grant application for Stevens Park bathroom renovations had been submitted. The board discussed a jointly funded plan to pursue a year‑round pool dome (a so‑called "bubble") through county and state capital cycles; staff said the full project estimate is about $3 million and that county buy‑in and CIP scheduling are needed.
Board members praised staff for event and upkeep work and asked staff to keep monitoring the drought‑impacted ponds, to proceed with sidewalk repairs and to return with updates on the pool dome funding route through the county CIP.
