Marion council adopts National Poppy Day, reappoints housing commissioners and awards cemetery mowing contract

At its April 7 meeting, the Marion Town Council took several unanimous procedural and contract actions.
Resolution and appointments Mark Cheney of American Legion Post 18 read a resolution asking the town to designate the Friday before Memorial Day as National Poppy Day; council moved, seconded and adopted the resolution unanimously. Later in the meeting Charles Harrington of the Marion Housing Authority appeared to request reappointment of two commissioners; the council reappointed Brian Reed and Regina Roberts in separate unanimous votes.
Contract and project actions Town staff recommended awarding the Round Hill Cemetery mowing contract to Elite Property Care for the 2025 season at $43,000; council voted to accept that bid after staff confirmed bonding and insurance. Staff also reported DEQ approval for the Market Street project and estimated work to begin in early fall. Separately, council voted to pause Park Boulevard phase two work after a motion and second; that motion carried unanimously.
What council discussed but did not vote on Council discussed street tree plantings (a $4,000 cap was approved by committee action earlier in the meeting) and ongoing procurement and technology questions raised by local vendors; staff apologized to a vendor who said she was blindsided by an earlier procurement decision and said the council would review the process.
