PSC approves Braxton water rate increase to fund $1.5 million filtration project

The Mississippi Public Service Commission approved the Town of Braxton’s petition to raise water rates to help fund a proposed nanofiltration plant intended to reduce mineral and iron content in the town’s groundwater supply.
Mr. Rhodes described Braxton as a small system serving about 227 customers inside the corporate limits and 62 customers one mile beyond the limits. He said the town plans to install a nanofiltration plant that will require a Class B‑licensed operator and has an estimated total cost of approximately $1.5 million; roughly 75% of funding is expected from a rural development grant program and the remainder from a loan that will increase interest expense to be recovered through rates.
The town proposed raising the base charge for the first 2,000 gallons from $21 to $25 and increasing the variable rate from $7 to $10 per 1,000 gallons over the minimum. Staff reviewed the financial data and recommended approval as fair, just, and reasonable to cover the increased operating and capital costs. Commissioners approved the petition by voice vote.
