Apprentices praise "Grow Your Own" teacher pathway; board authorizes apprenticeship funding

Two apprentices and Nebraska's 2026 Teacher of the Year told the State Board of Education on May 8 that apprenticeships and community-centered learning are helping address educator shortages.

Brad Dirkson, an NDE administrator, gave an overview of teacher apprenticeship work, telling the board the pilot grew from 25 to over 200 registered apprentices across more than 50 school systems and that 92% of apprentices who have completed the program remained in their original districts. "We're not just filling apprenticeship spots, we're filling teacher vacancies," he said.

Sarah Dilman, a student teacher and former educational assistant, described the program as financially feasible and mentoring-driven, saying it provided "guidance and mentorship" that helped her build skills and confidence. "Because of this program, I feel more prepared and more confident in pursuing a career in education," she said.

Rachel Graange, who moved from paraprofessional work to a special education apprentice role, said the team-based support in her district convinced her to pursue special education. Both apprentices urged more flexible scheduling for online coursework and additional office hours for questions.

The board also heard from Sarah Harden, the 2026 Nebraska Teacher of the Year, who described hands-on learning and community partnerships (including a geothermal greenhouse and a "smiles and stems" flower program) as strategies that connect students and retain teachers. Harden said she wants to "broaden the path to teaching for people like myself and Rachel and Sarah."

Separately, the board authorized the commissioner to approve Nebraska teacher apprenticeship program funding (motion adopted by roll call; vote recorded as seven yes, one absent in committee voting). NDE staff told the board the funding supports program growth, retention, and targeted endorsements (including special education).
