Dare County Schools recognizes student artists, athletes and staff with inaugural Lighthouse Awards

At the April 13 meeting the district honored Farm to School and A250 county flag contest winners, celebrated First Flight teams and students who advanced in regional competitions, and presented the first Lighthouse Awards to several staff for exemplary service.
Dare County Schools used its April 13 board meeting to highlight student achievements and present staff recognitions across the district.
Superintendent Steve Basnight announced that a Dare County student was selected for the North Carolina Farm to School calendar. Miss Fallon, the district's director of secondary education, announced winners of the A250 County Flag Challenge from Manteo Elementary—honorable mention Patrick Severson, second place Ammon Garza, and first place Caroline Borland—and thanked teachers who supported the project.
The district also recognized teams and students for recent accomplishments: First Flight High School performers who traveled to Carnegie Hall, students who advanced in math and renewable energy contests (including a team advancing to nationals), and FFES students who raised more than $5,000 for the American Heart Association.
The board presented inaugural Lighthouse Awards to staff nominated by their peers; honorees named in the meeting included Mary Wyland (licensure specialist; recognized though relocated), Elena Gonzalez (4th-grade DLI teacher, Kitty Hawk Elementary), Michael Dale (network engineer), Rick Anderson (systems administrator), Genie Mauser (teaching and learning facilitator), Sarah Pritchard (principal, Manteo Elementary), and Elaine Barnett (school nutrition assistant, Kate Patterson Elementary). Nominations highlighted leadership, instructional support, problem-solving and student-centered service.
The board thanked students, staff and community partners and closed the recognitions portion before moving to business items.
