Joplin Schools reports high Career Ladder participation, expanded tutoring and professional development

Dr. Mwangi, presenting the Career Ladder update alongside committee members Rebecca Moran, Kelsey Norman, Janet Parker Spain and Stacy Saunders, said completion improved from roughly 90% last year to about 97% this year, and that stage-three participation (the 100-hour level) was about 69.4% of eligible teachers. Dr. Mwangi said the state approved the district’s Career Ladder application for the coming year.
Presenters reported program totals of about 34,645 Career Ladder hours districtwide, including roughly 9,514 hours of tutoring and about 15,717 professional-development hours. The presenters attributed the gains to increased after-school tutoring, targeted interventions, and teacher collaboration (book studies and shared planning).
On funding, the presentation noted both state and local contributions; presenters described the district’s contribution as roughly $811,000 and said the state’s share was reported separately during the slide presentation. The committee also noted stage four of the program is not reimbursed by the state and would require local funding if pursued widely.
Board members praised the results and asked for retention and detailed funding figures later in the year when staffing changes settle. No formal vote was required for the update; it was presented for information and to justify continued program support.
