Town authorizes 10-year natural resource plan for Creek Turn Park

Hainesport Township authorized the Atlantic Soil Conservation District to develop a 10-year natural resource and forest-management plan for Creek Turn Park, focusing on invasive-species control, wildfire mitigation and educational uses.
John, a county-licensed forester representing the district, described the plan's goals and noted trails already present in the park. He said the plan would recommend measures to restore native forest species, reduce wildfire risk and propose ideas to use the park as a living classroom for schools and residents.
"This will also mitigate any wildfire," John said, underscoring the safety and conservation benefits of a forest-management approach. The Committee moved to authorize development of the plan and to engage the district's services; the motion passed unanimously.
The forester summarized his background in forest ecosystem science and experience with soil conservation districts and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service.
The committee asked administration to oversee contracting the services and to keep the governing body informed as the plan advances.
