Pahokee commissioners trim proposed holiday list, approve modified schedule for staff

The Pahokee City Commission on Sept. 23 debated and then adopted a modified holiday schedule for FY 2025–26 after commissioners questioned the number of observed days for city staff.
City Manager explained the proposed calendar mirrored recent years but recommended adding the Fridays after Christmas and New Year’s so staff could spend additional time with family; Commission discussion focused on whether some federal holidays should remain on the city calendar. Commissioner Scott objected to the overall number of days and moved to reconsider specific entries.
By consensus and motion, the commission removed Columbus Day and Presidents Day from the list of observed city holidays. The commission retained Veterans Day (Nov. 11), two days for Thanksgiving (Nov. 27–28), Christmas observances (Dec. 24 and 25) and New Year’s (Dec. 31 and Jan. 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan. 19), Memorial Day (May 25), Juneteenth (June 19), an observed Independence Day (July 3) and Labor Day (Sept. 7). The approved schedule was incorporated into Resolution 2025‑56, which passed by unanimous roll call.
Commissioners asked staff to post the adopted schedule and noted the decision aligns the city with many Palm Beach County municipalities while addressing commissioner concerns about the total number of days off.
