City staff member Mr. Stolman told the council the town has regularly allowed the extra time and that the statutory due date typically falls around Feb. 15; when that date falls on a weekend, the town allows a short penalty-free window. "So, we just wave the penalty," he said.
Council members discussed the rationale briefly but raised no objections before the motion passed. The extension was presented as an administrative measure to maintain consistency with prior years rather than a change in tax policy.
The council did not attach additional conditions to the extension. The city will continue to collect taxes and process payments under the extended schedule.
