The Mendon Zoning Board of Appeals voted Oct. 23 to grant an area variance permitting a roughly 40‑by‑50‑foot addition to an existing barn at 1744 West Bloomfield Road. The application was presented during a public hearing and the board approved a resolution citing provisions of the town code that govern nonconforming structures.
An applicant representing the property described the addition as located on the northeast side of the barn and said it is set far back on the parcel; the applicant told the board they plan to match the look and roofline of the existing structure and that no additional utilities are expected. A board member asked whether animals were kept on the property; the applicant acknowledged typical barn uses.
The board’s resolution cites Town Code §260‑21 (limitations on enlarging nonconforming structures) and §260‑8 (front yard and accessory structure restrictions) and records that the barn is a prior nonconforming structure built before adoption of the current code. The application was referred to the Monroe County Planning Board under GML 239‑m and returned as a local matter. The board also characterized the proposed action as Type II under the town’s environmental review rules (SRA), saying no further environmental review was required.
During deliberations members discussed conditions to reduce visual and neighborhood impact, including matching siding and roof color and minor adjustments to fencing around the stables. The board voted to approve the variance; the transcript records the motion and a vote in favor (the chair stated the motion carried). Following the meeting the board indicated it will issue a written determination recording the findings and any conditions.
