Bremen council approves interim police chief and promotes sergeant to assistant chief; garage door safety raised

Council members voted to appoint Chief Stouter as interim chief during the transition tied to Chief Kyle's retirement, and to later make him full chief. The council also approved the appointment of Sergeant Matt Schneijel as assistant chief effective Feb. 23, timed to the start of the next pay period.
Chief Stouter told the council he has begun adding SRO (school resource officer) activity summaries to the police packets so council members can track school engagement. He also described an ongoing safety problem with a police garage door that recently began opening and closing on its own; repair calls have already cost about $250 each, and the estimate for new garage doors, tracks and openers is about $10,000.
Council members treated the garage door issue as a safety matter and indicated the town should identify funding or reallocate budget authority to address it. The leadership appointments passed on voice votes.
