Public works lists chip-seal, hot-mix and drainage projects across Cochise County

Cochise County public works presented its quarterly work plans at the May 28 work session, detailing recent and planned maintenance across Bisbee, Sierra Vista, Benson and other districts. Public Works Director Jason Fosio summarized mowing, maintenance grading, striping and chip-seal work completed this quarter and outlined projects scheduled for the upcoming quarter.

Fosio reported chip seal and fog-seal activity by location and mileage: Car Canyon (1.5 miles), Golden Acres (3.2 miles), Central Highway (16.2 miles), Janella (1.3 miles), Wild Rabbit (2.2 miles), and Old Pomarine (3.2 miles), among others. He said Davis Road had an AOT-reimbursable revenue line for right-of-way acquisition and that a Taylor Road drainage and culvert repair is anticipated at the beginning of June.

Fosio also described supply-chain issues and the county’s response: hauling and staging of chip material resumed after vendor delays, and contractors are being mobilized for contracted sections such as Dragoon Road (13 contracted miles), which Fosio said would begin with message boards and mobile traffic control. The department reported 48.64 miles completed in-house this fiscal year and an expected total of 61.64 miles once contracted work is finished.

Why it matters: The project list and schedules determine when residents will see active work and short-term traffic impacts, and they reflect how vendor availability, material staging and contingency dollars shape maintenance timing. Supervisors asked for more straightforward summaries and totals on slides to help the public understand variances and impacts.

Next steps: Staff will add total-dollar and year-over-year comparisons to future materials and continue to update the board on mobilization for Dragoon Road, Taylor Road drainage work and other scheduled chip-seal operations.
