Council reappoints Dr. Lauren Brown to Board of Safety after council debate over candidate Jim Le

The Munster Town Council voted on Dec. 10 to reappoint Dr. Lauren Brown to a three-year term on the Board of Safety beginning Jan. 1, 2026, after an extended exchange over whether to bring in new members. One councilor said the council had campaigned to recruit and rotate qualified volunteers and urged appointing applicant Jim Le, a retired Hammond police officer now with the U.S. Marshals’ office, instead.
“I cannot support a reappointment for a sixth term when we have such a highly qualified alternative candidate in the person of Jim Le,” the councilor said, urging the council to move experienced members into other boards to create openings. The councilor cited the council’s 2023 pledge to find and keep qualified members and argued for bringing new people into boards and commissions.
Supporters of Dr. Brown praised his long service and cited accomplishments on the Board of Safety, including shortening ambulance response times. Another council member said Dr. Brown had done an “outstanding job” and supported his reappointment.
Clerk Wendy conducted a roll-call vote; the motion to reappoint Dr. Brown passed. One councilor asked the clerk to record a vote in favor of Jim Le, and that preference was entered into the record, but the motion to reappoint Dr. Brown carried.
