Walker County Commissioners approve routine procurements, veteran housing repair and budget reallocations

At its June 1 meeting, the Walker County Commissioners Court approved a series of routine procurements, small infrastructure repairs, and budget reallocations, and held a public hearing on a subdivision replat.

Veteran housing repairs: The court approved a prepayment—one-third of an estimated $6,592.50—to Randall Services so plumbing work can begin on a low-income veteran's home, with the amount to be reimbursed through the Texas Veterans grant program. Bob, who identified himself as representing a nonprofit called Heart and Hammer, said the veteran is honorably discharged, has a 10% disability and a family of four; he described the repairs as necessary to restore a long-out-of-service children’s bathroom. "This is a low-income veteran, honorable discharge," Bob said. The court approved the prepayment by motion.

Procurement and maintenance approvals: The court approved the purchase of a Canon copier for the Treasurer’s office at the quoted contract price from a regional contract, awarded primary and alternate suppliers for road materials (primary delivery by Sean McCord Logistics of Giddings, Texas; alternate delivery by Texas Sand & Gravel of Lillian, Texas; primary pickup from A Costa Aggregates), and approved a bid to replace the aerobic system at the weigh-station scale house at an estimated $9,970 (the county noted a separate $10 state fee would still apply). Commissioners also approved replacement refrigeration/freezer equipment for the county storm shelter after reviewing warranty and capacity options.

Budget and grants: The court approved Order 2026-57, a set of budget amendments and reallocations that moved contingency funds into specific line items (including allocations for the sheriff and legal fees) and reallocated certain grant funds and Title I receipts across road and bridge precincts. The court also approved a Forest Service field agreement (FS-1500) that staff said had been negotiated with Leslie Hughes of the Forest Service, and approved a citizen participation plan and procurement policy required for Texas General Land Office disaster recovery block grant funding tied to a grant associated with Daniel.

Planning and permits: The court held a public hearing on plat 2026-01 (Chandler Ranch replat); no speakers appeared and the hearing was closed. The court approved plat 2026-014 (Chandler Ranch replat), an exemption application E-2026-018, and a 12-month extension for permit 2025-0291 (FM 3179).

Administrative notes: Commissioners and staff were reminded that county property insurance review is ongoing and that a newly elected commissioner will take office Jan. 1. The court adjourned without executive session or contested public comment on the agenda items.
