NBTHs outlines AVID and STAR expansion and plans to host regional AVID training

Assistant Principal Lewis Emanuel provided a program overview of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and STAR (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) at the board's May 27 conference meeting hosted at North Brunswick Township High School.
Emanuel said the AVID site team worked to "successfully align our schoolwide understanding of academic rigor" across departments and described Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) that help teachers implement consistent expectations. He emphasized AVID's four‑year pathway model and postsecondary exposure — college visits, career speakers and apprenticeship experiences — that aim to create individualized pathways for students, including multilingual learners.
Emanuel said the program is growing at a steady pace to preserve fidelity and individualized support and announced that NBTHs will host a regional AVID summer training in July that could bring ‘‘upwards of 400 individuals’’ from the tri‑state area to the high school. He framed AVID as a contributor to the district’s broader instructional vision rather than a standalone intervention.
Board members thanked Emanuel and district staff for the presentation and for opening the high school for the evening event. The board then returned to its business agenda.
