High school students describe expanding Medical Careers pathway; board praises hands-on certification outcomes

Students and instructors from Forest Lake's Medical Careers program presented their work and outcomes to the school board on March 5, describing a pipeline of classes and experiences that provide certifications and college credit.
Tracy Johnson, who teaches EMR and EMT courses, introduced students who described the curriculum and extracurricular activities. "Between these classes, there are nearly 300 students who are also taking advantage of these health career courses," said student Eva Preagard, who with peers described opportunities to earn college credit, CNA certification and EMT training.
Students recounted hands-on experiences, including ride-alongs with ambulance services, participation in competitions, volunteering at nursing homes and planning community service projects. Board members commended the program and asked about college-credit totals; students reported several credits already earned and some acceptance to selective nursing programs.
Trustees encouraged continuing partnerships with clinical providers, highlighted the value of work-based learning and thanked program staff for the pathways that lead students into health-care careers.
