Grafton School Committee approves multiple policy reads, updates sponsorship rules

At its May 13 meeting the Grafton School Committee advanced a series of policy updates provided by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) and approved revised local guidance on advertising and sponsorships.
Members approved IHBB (Gifted and Talented Education) and updated IKB (Homework) as second reads and accepted first reads of JFBB (School Choice) and JKAA (Physical Restraint) — committee members noted JKAA will require two readings. The committee also accepted JLCD (administering medicine to students) and JLCDC (self-administration/self-carry of medications) as first reads; the district’s head nurse reviewed the medical language and confirmed it aligns with current practice.
On sponsorships and fundraising the committee restored language granting the school committee authority to approve or deny major permanent advertising displays, such as billboards, scoreboards or field signage. Members discussed the challenge of defining "major sponsorship" and agreed that operational guidelines (procedures) for principals would be developed outside of the policy text; the policy will require school committee approval for permanent prominent installations.
Members also took a first read of KBG (Parent Advisory Councils) and discussed additional housekeeping edits to reflect policies the committee asked be added to the handbook (IKF competency determination, removal of JICB, cell phone and restraint policies). Several members asked for additional time to review the physical restraint policy before final action; the district will bring the final language back as required for a second reading.
No dollar amounts or external legal citations beyond MASC guidance were introduced; the committee directed staff to circulate the reviewed policy drafts to members and the nurse for final review.
