Grafton School Committee re-elects Leora Abram as chair; Rebecca named vice chair, Stella clerk

The Grafton School Committee on May 13 approved Leora Abram as chair for the coming year, electing Rebecca as vice chair and Stella as clerk during an organizational vote at the start of the meeting.

Committee members debated whether to rotate leadership annually or retain continuity as the district faces teacher contract negotiations and an anticipated superintendent transition. One member, speaking as vice chair, said she did not want to serve as chair this year and argued that continuity after a difficult year would benefit the district. Another member warned that keeping the same leaders year after year risked concentrating control and said rotating roles fosters growth.

After discussion, the committee voted to approve Abram as chair. The meeting record indicates the chair vote was declared passed. The committee subsequently approved Rebecca as vice chair following a motion and second, and named Stella as clerk; members expressed confidence that the trio would work together on operational priorities.

The committee then assigned members to standing subcommittees for the coming year. Appointments included representation on the budget, policy, health and wellness, custodial and nurse negotiation teams, and committees focused on teachers, paraprofessionals, and capital improvement planning (CIPC). Members discussed maintaining continuity on some subcommittees while creating opportunities for others to learn committee work.

Members also discussed whether the chair should sign warrants or transfer that task to the chair of the budget subcommittee for procedural clarity. The committee agreed to consider a formal change to subcommittee descriptions and to review subcommittee charges at a subsequent meeting.

The reorganizational actions take effect immediately as the committee begins work on this summer's agenda and the district's operational priorities.
