The Sussex County Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution on May 27 requesting that the governor restore the New Jersey School of Conservation's (NJSOC) budget request of $3 million.
The resolution recites statutory language transferred to the Friends of NJSOC and asserts that the state had eliminated funds for operation and maintenance, forcing a closure that would harm local businesses and educational programming. The resolution cites a county estimate that NJSOC contributed $1.7 million to the local economy over the past three years and warned of possible layoffs of 30 staff if funding is not restored.
A public commenter, Sandy Hall of Sanderson Township, addressed the board during general comment to thank commissioners for supporting the NJSOC resolution and described the program's importance for kids, scouting groups and local partners. Commissioners moved to adopt the resolution and roll call votes recorded unanimous approval.
The resolution directs the clerk to forward a certified copy to the governor's office, local state legislators and the Friends of NJSOC.
