Mr. Thornish, the staff project lead, described the scope as replacement of aging (roughly 40‑year‑old) 8‑inch and 12‑inch mains, new service laterals to roughly a dozen to two dozen properties, installation of new hydrants and coordination with adjacent county road work that will alter road grades. “We made a decision … to put brand new water mains in since what’s existing there has been in the road at least 40 years,” Mr. Thornish said, explaining the choice to install new mains under the rebuilt roadway to avoid premature future breaks.
