Iola council approves rezoning of 11.3 acres to C2, sets budget hearing and votes to enter executive session

The Iola City Council on the night it met approved ordinance 3546 to rezone an 11.3-acre parcel the city owns on the east side of town from R1 (single-family) to C2 (general business).
A city presenter said the planning commission held a public hearing Oct. 21 and voted unanimously (6-0) to recommend the rezoning. Council members moved and seconded the ordinance and the motion carried.
Council also discussed budget amendments, including higher-than-anticipated health insurance expenses and some additional tourism and convention spending. The council voted to set a public hearing on the 2025 budget amendments for Dec. 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the council chambers.
Separately, a council member moved that the body recess into a 10-minute executive session to discuss acquisition of real property pursuant to KSA 75-4319(b)(6). The motion specified attendees (mayor, council, city administrator, assistant city administrator and attorney) and said the regular meeting would reconvene at 6:18 p.m.; the motion was carried.
Routine business that night included approval of the consent agenda after a member asked whether a water-tower antenna charge referenced a private entity; staff responded that the private party removed and reinstalled the antenna and the city was not paying for a private entity’s equipment.
The meeting opened with roll call, which recorded Ben, Joelle and Joel absent and a quorum of five in attendance. The council adjourned at the end of the session.
What’s next: Ordinance 3546 was approved by the council; the budget amendment public hearing is scheduled for Dec. 8 at 6:00 p.m. The council said it would reconvene in open session after the advertised executive session time.
