Committee files library collaboration items; agrees to create single annual library update

The Committee on Teaching, Learning, and Student Success voted May 28 to file two items on the Worcester Public Schools’ collaboration with the Worcester Public Library and to return with a single annual update during budget season.

Deputy Superintendent Marie Moss told the committee the district and the Worcester Public Library continue to meet regularly and that the district retains access to the Sora digital reading platform. She said an earlier update described the plan to dedicate an additional prep period at seven elementary schools so that each can run library classes staffed by teachers shifted from a fourth‑prep/technology schedule to a library/technology teacher role.

Member Vanessa Alvarez urged continuing reports and recommended more frequent updates on the partnership’s meetings; Vice Chair Benenda asked what the repurposed fourth‑prep teachers would do. The administration said those teachers will provide library curriculum, support circulation (students checking out books), run read‑alouds and receive training in June and additional training before fall implementation.

Committee members debated whether to convert the current biannual report to an annual update. The group agreed to file the current items and add a single annual‑update item at the next full committee meeting so the committee receives an annual report in time for budget planning.

The roll call on the filing and follow‑up item recorded yes votes from Member Vanessa Alvarez, Vice Chair Benenda and Chair Alex Guardiola.
