Committee reviews Chapter 74 enrollment data, hears equity questions about admissions lottery

The Committee on Teaching, Learning, and Student Success reviewed a quarter‑4 report on Chapter 74 career and technical education enrollment on May 28, and members pressed the administration on equity in admissions.
Dr. Emily Leman, administrative director of college and career, said the report includes ZIP‑code data, current ninth‑grade enrollments and an in‑progress tally of next‑year enrollments for Worcester Tech and the district’s three comprehensive high schools. She told the committee an amendment added demographic data by school and a summary of internship placements.
Member Vanessa Alvarez asked how the district ensures equity in acceptance. Leman described the district’s Chapter 74 admissions and enrollment policy as a weighted lottery, explaining that the lottery assigns weights for the application itself, for a letter of recommendation and for attendance. “There were no students deemed ineligible for the lottery,” the administration said.
Chair Alex Guardiola and members praised the internship breakdown and said the data helps the district show workforce pipeline connections with employers, higher education and other partners.
The committee voted to approve and file the Chapter 74 enrollment report. The roll call recorded Member Vanessa Alvarez, Vice Chair Benenda and Chair Alex Guardiola voting yes.
