Residents press for hydrant reinstall and pole transfers; code enforcement reports fire cleanup underway

During public comment at the April 3 meeting, resident Ruth Seward asked whether the fire hydrant that formerly stood near her home by the gas station could be returned, citing safety concerns given the gas station's proximity. Superintendent David M. Decker and Mayor Ronald G. Harting explained the former unit was a dead-end hydrant that does not meet current requirements; Trustee John R. McNulty, who is a member of the local fire department, said the department can rely on nearby hydrants that meet standards.
Another attendee, Edward McLean, offered to compile a list of old utility poles around the village that still carry lines and should have those lines transferred to new poles and the old poles removed; he said he would forward that list to the Public Service Commission and Mayor Harting thanked him for volunteering.
Code Enforcement Officer Richard Osborne reported that permit activity has been slow, yearly fire inspections are being conducted as scheduled, the owner of 14 Main Street has begun clean-up after a fire and has attracted some potential buyers, and preliminary discussions have occurred about renting part of 8 Park Street. Osborne said a draft letter will be sent to residents with property-maintenance issues.
No formal board action was recorded on the hydrant request or the utility-pole offer during this meeting; both items were taken as resident input and staff were thanked for raising the issues. The board proceeded to other agenda items.
