Commission retains McKenna for interim planning support while city prepares RFP

The East Grand Rapids City Commission approved an interim professional services agreement with McKenna, a statewide planning firm, to provide short-term planning support after the retirement of the city’s longtime planner, Paul Leblanc.
City Manager Charles explained that Leblanc retired at the end of May and staff recommended McKenna to assist with immediate planning needs, specifically citing the 'gas line investors' project that is currently active. Charles said staff will issue an RFP for long-term planning services but wanted an interim arrangement so work would not slow while recruitment and procurement proceed.
Charles said that any costs associated with outside reviews tied to the project will be charged to the developer’s escrow and reimbursed to the city, so there would be no net cost to the city for those specific review tasks. The commission moved, seconded and approved the interim authorization for McKenna.
