Council reviews language and placement options for three historical markers

Miss Bishop briefed the council on three proposed historical markers: Rick Bragg (currently under construction with placement under discussion, likely at the library), Lily Led Better and Theodore Bert Fox (both deceased; families have reviewed proposed language). She said the Alabama Historical Association — rather than the Alabama Historical Commission — appears to be a better fit because the commission requires placement on a registered building or cemetery, which may not work for these markers.

Miss Bishop said the marker language has been vetted by family members and by Sandra Sudith in discussions with the families; she acknowledged a prior typo in the draft language and asked council to review the proposed wording before staff forwards it to the Alabama Historical Association for formal review. She gave an estimated cost range of $2,800–$3,400 per marker, which includes signposts.

Council members asked about placement and visibility. For Lily Led Better, staff suggested a location near the intersection of Leiga and 204 where there is seating and good visibility from the road; for Theodore Bert Fox, staff discussed options on city-hall grounds, near the flagpole or at a visible intersection. Miss Bishop said the aloud marker text would likely be slightly shorter than the draft materials but would not add new content beyond the vetted essentials.

Next steps: Council members asked staff to circulate the proposed language and recommended placement options for review; staff will forward the item to the Alabama Historical Association for formal consideration and return with any association feedback.
