Selectmen approve Quiet Corner Garden Club’s white oak donation and planting

The Thompson Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a request from the Conservation Commission to accept and plant a white oak donated by the Quiet Corner Garden Club in celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
First Selectman Nick summarized that the chosen site is behind the old Knights of Columbus building in North Gaddale, near the water and the dam, and described the donation as both a beautification and a scientific choice because the species is indigenous and less susceptible to local pests and fungi. TPW director Joe said the spot is open, visible and likely to be enjoyed when the tree canopy matures: “No, I just uh glad we found a good spot for it and it's going to be enjoyed.”
Selectmen discussed that the tree will include a plaque identifying its purpose, similar to other commemorative plantings across town, and voted unanimously to accept the planting proposal.
The planting is to be coordinated with TPW staff and the Conservation Commission; selectmen did not record any associated town budget allocation at the meeting. The approval was a standard, unanimous consent vote.
