Golf-course advisory committee warns of irrigation, staffing and funding strains as tournaments surge

At the city council meeting on May 28, the golf-course advisory committee presented a detailed report on operations, participation and capital needs. Committee members and volunteers highlighted strong tournament demand — with many events full and waiting lists — and recommended increases to tournament fees and a review of season-pass pricing to better align revenue with rising maintenance and capital costs.

Advisory members described infrastructure concerns: irrigation equipment is aging, parts and temporary repairs have kept the course operating but the system is near failure in some spots, and the short playing season intensifies the fiscal challenge of running a seasonal enterprise. One speaker said that 357 residences are situated on the golf-course property and asked the council to weigh that when considering funding sources. Committee members urged a collaborative approach combining user fees, potential modest tax support and creative revenue strategies.

Council members and the mayor thanked the committee, recognized staff efforts (noting a new greenskeeper and pro), and emphasized collaboration rather than micromanagement. The council acknowledged that the course is being structured more as an enterprise and must cover its costs while also noting the community value of youth programs and local tourism benefits tied to the facility.

The council did not take direct funding action at the meeting but instructed staff and the advisory committee to continue producing proposals and costed options for future council consideration.
