Suffolk Council commits local funding share to VDOT for FY27–FY30 projects

Suffolk City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution that commits the city to provide its local share for transportation projects under the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) programs for fiscal years 2027 through 2030.
Public Works Director Greg Benton told the council the commitment is necessary to remain eligible for state and federal funding streams — including Smart Scale, revenue sharing and other VDOT and federal programs — and to maintain momentum on a portfolio of roughly 80 projects. Benton described project types that could use the city’s local match, including roadway widenings, interchange improvements, bridge replacements, trail extensions and signal upgrades.
Council members had no additional questions and approved the resolution 8–0. Staff said the action provides both the financial commitment and administrative authority needed to continue seeking outside funds and advance the city’s long‑term transportation priorities.
